LORD Corporation Introduces Two In-mold Bonding Adhesives
LORD Corporation has launched two new in-mold bonding (IMB) systems for bonding addition-cured silicone rubber to a variety of metal and compatible plastic substrates.
During the injection or compression molding process, LORD IMB 3020 and IMB 3030 two-component adhesive solutions can effectively bond a variety of addition-cured silicone rubbers to a wide range of metal substrates and compatible plastic substrates including polycarbonates, polyphenylsulfones, polyetherimides, some polyamides, some elastomers and other thermoplastics.
Expanded Durometer & Curing Temperature
Paul Wheeler, LORD Corporation Staff Scientist, said:
“Most plastics require plasma treatment to create hydroxyl groups to promote silane bonding. Special surface preparation such as plasma for thermoplastic substrates is typically not necessary for LORD IMB 3020 and 3030 adhesive systems, but it may improve the wetting properties of the adhesive on more difficult, or low-surface energy substrates. There are no moisture or atmosphere application limitations with LORD IMB 3020 and 3030.”

Generate robust bonds that withstand 85-degrees Celsius at 85 percent relative humidity for 14 days.
Eric Dean, Manager, Global Business Development and Marketing Strategy, LORD Corporation, said:
“LORD IMB 3020 and 3030 Adhesives provide a strong, durable structural bond when over-molded with liquid silicone rubber (LSR). The bond strength is greater than the silicone being molded and leaves 100% rubber on the substrate after peel tests.”
LSR is typically cured above 110 degrees Celsius, unless the substrate has a low melting point or the LSR is molded near sensitive electronics. Low-temperature curing silicones work at temperatures of 70 to 90 degrees Celsius and LORD primers work well with these lower temperatures as well.
Applications for IMB Adhesives include consumer electronics, automotive components, medical devices, and household items.
