HERMA has initiated series production of its new AutoSplicer. Numerous orders have already been placed, including by customers in Germany, Russia, Spain and the USA. The AutoSplicer allows labels to be fed to the dispenser without interruption. As the HERMA 400 high-speed labeler has steadily quickened and the supply of labels needs replenishing more and more frequently, calls from the industry for this kind of solution have been getting louder. The series production model of the new AutoSplicer, which was exhibited at FachPack 2013, has been further optimized as a consequence. "We were eager to give our customers a splicer that would enable them to raise efficiency and scale down interruptions in production. It was also important to offer the solution as part of the HERMA modular design concept, so that it can be purchased as an add-on or for retrofitting in an existing line," explains Martin Kühl, head of HERMAs Labeling Machines division. "At the same time, we have reduced the guard openings, so that the AutoSplicer occupies less space."
The key benefit of compatibility with all formats has been transferred from the prototype to the series production model. The AutoSplicer therefore puts a stop to the laborious and sometimes costly machine alterations that are often required when changing to a different roll width or label type. Unlike other models, moreover, the AutoSplicer operates without a knife or similar cutting tool. HERMAs solution focuses on reliable adhesion between the end of one roll and the start of the next. The splice is executed extremely quickly - in a fraction of a second. As a consequence, only a small loop of backup web is required. This significantly enhances the smooth running of both the web and the labeling process - key characteristics for users who attach high priority to minimizing interruptions to the production process.
Subsequent addition to existing lines
With controlled unwind units, the AutoSplicer can deliver up to an average of 30 meters of label web a minute. The output can be raised to as much as 70 meters a minute by motorized unwinders. HERMA has developed a splicer without a cutting device by basing its AutoSplicer solution on defined web ends. These can be provided easily during the label production process. The operator simply has to ensure that the strip of adhesive tape is correctly positioned. The system uses conventional industrial adhesive tape. As an autonomous device, the AutoSplicer can simply be added later to existing HERMA labeling systems if necessary. Digital signaling ensures smooth communication between the AutoSplicer and the higher-level system.
Located in Filderstadt near Stuttgart (Germany) HERMA GmbH is a leading European specialist in self-adhesive technology. In the 2012 fiscal year, the HERMA Group generated sales of around ?45.6 million with 840 employees in three divisions - Self-adhesive Materials, Labels and Labelling Machines. The export ratio was more than 55 %.
