Scott Bader’s Crystic Crestomer Range of Urethane Acrylate Adhesives Acquire RINA Certification

Registro Italiano Navale (RINA) Group has given a new approval and reapproved grades from Scott Baders Crystic Crestomer range of high performance urethane acrylate structural adhesives. A new RINA certification has been awarded to Crystic Crestomer 1153PA for the structural bonding of glassfiber reinforced plastic composites.

Crestomer 1153PA, which is pre-accelerated, and MEKP cured INSERT INTO [lzx].[dbo].[tb_new]([id],[type],[title],[source],[personal],[image],[contents],[time],[number]) VALUES (2% w/v) was developed by Scott Bader to offer an 80% longer working time to OEMs, fabricators and installers who want to bond together very large GRP parts. According to Scott Baders published technical data at standard 250C INSERT INTO [lzx].[dbo].[tb_new]([id],[type],[title],[source],[personal],[image],[contents],[time],[number]) VALUES (770F) ambient conditions, Crestomer 1153PA has a 40 minute longer working time of up to 90 minutes compared with 50 minutes for Crestomer 1152PA. Both Crestomer grades are used by leading fiberglass boat builders for a variety of demanding structural applications. In particular, GRP hull bulkhead bonding is specified in preference to FRP over-laminating to significantly reduce weight, speed up production, reduce VOC emissions and avoid fiber print through.

With its significantly longer geltime, Crestomer 1153PA is specifically aimed at bonding applications for fiberglass boats over 25 meters INSERT INTO [lzx].[dbo].[tb_new]([id],[type],[title],[source],[personal],[image],[contents],[time],[number]) VALUES (82ft) long, as well as other non-marine structural applications. This is where very large GRP parts need a longer adhesive open working time during assembly to provide sufficient time to accurately position such large GRP moldings. Having a longer adhesive open time can be vital, not just on a factory shop floor, but for building and construction projects where GRP sectional parts are installed on site, typically where parts are lifted by crane into position and then secured and bonded.

GRP fabricators located in hotter parts the world, with typical ambient temperatures above 270C (~810F) have also seasonally switched to using Crestomer 1153PA to get the optimum working time needed throughout the year.

Two other grades have also been re-approved by RINA: Crestomer 1152PA; and Crestomer Advantage 30, which is a pre-packed 380ml cartridge. Back in May 2009, RINA certification approval was also given to Crystic Crestomer 1196PA for its use as a structural adhesive to bond cores and skin laminates in marine sandwich structures. Crestomer structural adhesives have also been awarded Lloyds acceptance and DNV approvals for GRP marine applications, which covers structural adhesives for use in the most critical FRP bonding applications. These include lifeboat and evacuation systems for the offshore, cruise and shipping industries, for which Crestomer 1152PA has been specified.

The Crystic Crestomer range is available in a keg, drum and cartridge options for application using a manual or pneumatic gun, along with static mixers and dispensing equipment for high volume bonding.
