PHILADELPHIA -- Dow Chemical Company will reveal technical details about a pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) technology that can help manufacturers keep protective films securely on products to protect plastic, glass and metal surfaces until they are ready for use. This one-part adhesive represents a new approach to manufacturing protective masking and will be featured as part of the Pressure Sensitive Tape Councils (PSTCs) Week of Learning 2011 in Orlando, Florida, on May 12th.
David Keely, field technical service manager for Dow Packaging and Converting, will speak at the Tech 34 Technical Seminar and present a paper titled "One-Part Adhesives for Protective Masking" on May 12 at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress.
Keely will discuss Dows one-part technology designed specifically for protective masking. The companys one-part solution, he says, addresses several drawbacks found in two-part adhesives traditionally used in these applications and gives manufacturers a fresh approach to manufacturing masking films. "With two-part formulations, pot life is limited as soon as the crosslinker is added," Keely explains, "impacting the converters flexibility and production efficiency. Our one-part technology provides for easier use and no pot life issues. Both benefits offer excellent application flexibility and production efficiency."
Keely will talk about how Dow testing indicates that the one-part technology equals the performance of traditional choices, exhibiting desirable low ultimate peel adhesion to masked surfaces as well as tight anchorage to the challenging low energy polyethylene films typically used in these applications. "This topic is particularly timely for PSTC attendees," says Bill Griffith, Dow senior technical manager, one of the papers authors. "Protective masking use is growing strongly due to increased robotic assembly and ever lengthier shipping distances from manufacturer to consumer." Protective masking shields the surfaces of fragile and sensitive items during manufacturing, packaging and transport.
