Tampa, Fla. -- Solvent-based polychloroprene adhesives have been the standard technology for high-performance contact adhesives for many years. Due to new environmental regulations and concerns, there is a growing demand for a better adhesive option. By replacing the solventborne ingredients with waterborne polychloroprenes, formulators can produce a better adhesive. Dr. Jeffrey Dormish, business development - Adhesives & Specialties, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, discussed this topic during his presentation, "Waterborne Polychloroprene Technology." at the Adhesive and Sealant Councils (ASC) Spring Convention and Expo. According to Dr. Dormish, in addition to being a better alternative to solventborne ingredients, the use of waterborne polychloroprenes also improves the storage stability of the adhesives. Traditionally there has been a trade-off between storage stability and end-use performance in waterborne polychloroprene adhesive technology. Dr. Dormish discusses products, such as Bayer MaterialScience LLCs Dispercoll C 2325 dispersion, that offer high adhesive performance along with greatly improved storage stability. Bayers line of Dispercoll C products are aqueous polychloroprene lattices often used in foam-laminating adhesives for the automotive, construction, furniture, footwear and packaging industries. Some new Bayer materials, like Dispercoll C XP 2694 and Dispercoll C XP 2717 dispersions, have a very good shelf life, and are ready-to-use adhesives as supplied. Although no formulating is needed for these products, they can still be modified by the adhesive manufacturer (if desired) to adjust performance specifications for a specific application. Dr. Dormish also explains a new technology that utilizes carbon dioxide activation of waterborne polychloroprenes to generate the high-performance adhesives. The carbon dioxide is added at the site where the bonding of the substrates will occur. This activation process can be performed in a fixed manufacturing site or via mobile equipment.
