DEGALAN acrylics for reactive hotmelts
More than 70 years of experience in methacrylate chemistry allows Evonik to develop and market functional polymers
according to our customers‘ specific requirements. DEGALAN acrylics for adhesives are polymers made of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl methacrylate which are mainly used to modify reactive hotmelts for flat lamination applications.
Various DEGALAN grades with acid and hydroxyl functionality, tailored glass transition temperature and molecular weight are available. These bead polymers provide outstanding quality and flow properties.
Flat lamination applications require long open times to give long handling times allowing to bond huge panels or sandwich composites. On the other hand the initial strength has to be very high to hold the bonded parts in place without any further mechanical fixation. DEGALAN modified reactive hotmelts provide low viscosity, very long open time and aggressive tack combined with high creep resistance directly after bonding.
Such moisture curing hotmelt adhesives are typically prepared by reacting poly- mer mixtures of DEGALAN acrylics, DYNACOLL copolyesters and polypropylene glycols with excess diisocyanates like MDI (Diphenylmethane diisocyanates) at elevated temperatures under exclusion of moisture. They can be applied e. g. with roller coaters.
Typical adhesive applications
• Sandwich composites of aluminum, FRP panels, foam or wood-based substrates e.g. for recreational vehicals
• Honeycomb structures for door manufacturing
• Foil laminated particleboard or medium density fibreboard panels e.g. for furniture
Packaging and Storage
• Paper bags, 25 kg net
• Keeps for 5 years if stored in a cool, dry place
